Germany has a number of large cities. There are 11 officially recognized metropolitan regions in Germany – and since 2006, 34 potential cities were identified which can be called a Regiopolis. The largest conurbation is the Rhine-Ruhr region (11.7 million in 2008), including Düsseldorf (the capital ofNorth Rhine-Westphalia), Cologne, Bonn, Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, and Bochum.
